I dare say that there are a number of Viet Nam veterans who are gay that could clarify the sort of treatment the Doctor refers to but doesn't describe. I think it would be very interesting to read the reactions of commenters above and others when faced with the blatant and probably not very pleasant facts...or perhaps, suggest that they be continued.
